James Paterson has been full of 100 new ideas daily for as long as he can remember. He is known for his whimsical wire sculptures and mesmerizing moving sculptures. He grew up in culturally vibrant Kensington Market in Toronto which inspires the shapes and colors of his work to this day. James and his wife Lynn live and move and have their being on the shores of Georgian Bay in Ontario, where he creates and runs and creates some more.
Born in Saskatchewan, Canada James grew up in the Kensington Market neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. Mr. Paterson received his BFA (hons.) from the University of Waterloo, and taught art at the elementary and high school level before leaving teaching to pursue art full time in 1989.
From the artist:
“I build these ambiguous machine-like objects by twisting wire together and infusing the emerging shapes with colour. I approach my art with a simple sense of wonder creating beautiful objects that give expression to mystery while expressing ideas that are redemptive, revealing the reality of God in the world.
I often incorporate interactive moving elements, so the viewer becomes an active participant in the sculpture. By turning a crank handle, the observer brings the art piece to life with its movement and whirling rhythms that quicken the senses.
I invite you to make daring explorations into these little realities, experiencing each piece as a small working model of the new creation..”
