Description
This 1830 engraving of Timbuktu is from a drawing by Rene Caillie, the first western explorer to return after visiting the city in 1828. The title of this piece comes from the introduction to The Way To Timbuktu, by Pat Ryan (2011 self-published). The author, a member of our family, traveled to Timbuktu in 2009. The title is as much about a city of imagination as it is about perception of life. Most of the incredible ancient clay architecture in Timbuktu is a designated World Heritage Site. The city is home to historic libraries containing spiritual text of important significance to Islam. Timbuktu is located in Mali and under increased threat by desertification from climate change.
