My work explores the connections between the physical act of creating balance and its calming effect in our increasingly chaotic environment.
Inspired primarily by the structural and graceful works of artists Constantin Brancusi and Georgia O’Keeffe, I’ve discovered a connection between the physical act and emotional sense of balance achieved from the creation of ceramic cairns and forms.
The act of stacking stones as a path marker or to pay homage to the deceased crosses millennia and cultures. Ever since childhood, I have been fascinated by the stone structures and monolithic head sculptures I viewed in National Geographic and, later in life, by the symbolism and calming effect of these structures during visits to Asia, Iceland, and New Mexico.
Through my work, which consists of atmospherically fired abstract sculptures and stacked individual ceramic forms, my hope is to invite the viewer to experience a sense of beauty and calm in our ever increasingly chaotic world.
