Jacob Houston

Jacob Houston is an enthusiastic participant in the field of art, creating unique paintings as well as building a busy art business. Houston has  made an impressive imprint on the regional art field, with feature articles in the Saratoga Living magazine, the  Albany Times Union, the Schenectady Daily Gazette, the Post Star, The Greenwich Journal & Salem Press, the Hill Country Observer, The Transcript in Williamstown, Massachusetts and The Chronicle.

Jake has been creating art since the time he could grasp a crayon. His peculiar grasp of crayons became an issue in kindergarten, leading the school’s occupational therapist to attempt to correct the grasp for quite a while in vain.  Many years later this man shared that he was glad that his attempts were unsuccessful and that he didn’t mess with Jake’s incredible artistic abilities!

In his elementary years, Jake became the  go-to guy for creating school program covers, but slowly his clientele base evolved into adult customers seeking commissioned works of art. Over the years, Jake’s art has consistently become more refined and detailed.

Jake is known for the perspective that he takes in his paintings, frequently from a vantage point above the subject. His subjects are as varied as old schoolhouses and country scenes; major cityscapes of Washington, D.C., London, L.A., NYC, and Chicago; major landscapes such as Notre Dame and Times Square; as well as scenes of his hometown of Greenwich, New York.  His favorite medium being acrylic, his paintings are vivid and detailed, captivating the viewer’s eye.

Jacob has had several solo shows in New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Some of the places that he has exhibited are: Salmagundi in NYC, Gallery 668 in Battenville, NY; Lapham Gallery, 6 Pine Street Gallery, Samantha’s and Gallery 99 in Glens Falls; Saratoga Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY; Milne Library in Williamstown, MA; Greenwich Free Library and the Washington County Farm Museum in Greenwich, NY; The Green Bridge Gallery in Cambridge, NY; the Historic Salem Courthouse in Salem; and the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, VT. He captured first prize at Lapham Gallery’s first LARAC 120 degrees Intercollegiate Art Competition, competing with fellow artists from New Paltz, Skidmore, Union, Hartwick, St. Rose, SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Adirondack, and SUNY Oneonta.

Jacob has been part of the Washington County Open Studios Tour two times- in the summer of 2017, and again in the summer of 2019.  He displayed his work at a three person exhibit at LARAC’s Lapham Gallery, was featured artist in the Malta League of Arts’ “Arts Attitude” art show, and also had a solo exhibit at the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, Vermont.  He was recently selected to be part of the National Society of Casein & Acrylic Painters’ exhibit at the Salmagudi Club in Manhattan for the second time where he was recognized with a prize two years in a row.
Most recently, he had the honor of exhibiting a gallery full of his paintings at the Hyde Collection from April until June of 2019.

Jake will be working to continue to build his art business with the help of his loyal manager, his mom Claire.  He would like to someday open his own gallery.
