“Renewal” brings together two accomplished artists whose distinct yet complementary practices delve into the essence of rebirth and resilience. Erik Laffer and Ronn Mattia’s artworks collectively create a narrative that speaks to the enduring human spirit and the perpetual journey of self-discovery and transformation.
The recurring motif of television static in Laffer’s work serves as a bridge between the past and the present. It invokes a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, reminding viewers of a time when technology – and perhaps life itself – was simpler. Yet, it also challenges them to consider the current state of our digital existence, marked by constant connectivity and fleeting moments of clarity amidst the chaos.
Erik Laffer’s artwork is a compelling blend of digital and traditional influences, offering viewers a unique perspective on the modern world’s complexities. His distinctive style challenges viewers to engage with the digital aesthetic in a new light. As technology continues to evolve, Laffer’s work remains a poignant reminder that amidst the noise and static, there is beauty, meaning and oftentimes, a sense of renewal to be found.
Ronn Mattia’s sculptures are inspired by the myth of the Phoenix, symbolizing rebirth and renewal. His pieces explore the dynamic interplay between strength and fragility, using materials such as discarded steel and delicate glass to create powerful narratives about nature’s resilience. Mattia’s work draws parallels between the Phoenix’s cyclical resurrection and the human experience, highlighting themes of transformation and resurgence. His sculptures invite viewers to contemplate the balance of power and vulnerability inherent in nature, and the potential for rebirth from decline.
The “Renewal” exhibition invites viewers to engage with the profound themes of identity and transformation. Through Laffer’s abstractions of the digital and Mattia’s symbolic sculptures, the exhibition explores the themes of the enduring spirit of renewal in both the personal and universal sense. The artworks reflect on the cyclical nature of life, the importance of understanding our past, and the potential for growth and rebirth.
