Opening Reception: Van Alstine & Malo

September 17 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

John and Teri present their visions of environment and place uniquely—both in aesthetic and medium. Yet both explore their relationship with nature and time with shared passion, depth, and skill.

John Van Alstine is an American sculptor living and working in New York’s Adirondack region. Best known for stone and metal abstract sculptures exhibiting exceptional balance and poise, John’s works are often multi-level with references to figure and classical, nautical, celestial, and western mythological themes.

“In contrast to the timelessness of stone, found-object metal is very time specific to 20th century industrial. The structural characteristics in my sculptures are employed to physically connect or suspend the stone elements. The strength of the metal allows choreographing and floating of the earthbound stone.”

Teri Malo’s landscape paintings primarily explore place, whether in her series on the mill towns of the Blackstone Valley or in her more recent coastal New England series. Time spent on Cape Ann and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and in Lubec, Maine, on the edge of the Bay of Fundy has profoundly affected her choice of subject matter. Her paintings capture large open spaces and the changeable atmosphere and seas of the New England region, as well as the rocky details of this familiar place.

“My profound interest in painting the coast, especially the ocean, comes from a desire to spend imaginative time in such a vast and bracing environment. The ocean is a moody and mysterious subject – elusive, constantly changing, and full of surprises. Understanding the abstract patterns of waves and foam, the underlying structure, and the subtle color shifts is an exciting challenge.”

Important: Face masks are optional.
